What it does

Abridge builds ambient documentation software for clinicians. During a consultation the product listens to the conversation between clinician and patient, transcribes it, and drafts a structured clinical note that the clinician reviews and edits before it is filed.

Read the full description

The problem it addresses is well documented and unglamorous: clinical documentation consumes a substantial share of a physician's working day, much of it after hours, and it is one of the most consistently cited contributors to burnout in the profession. Software that reduces the typing without changing what ends up in the record is therefore valuable in a way that is easy to measure (minutes per encounter, notes closed the same day) and hard to argue with.

What distinguishes ambient documentation from dictation is that nobody is dictating. The clinician talks to the patient rather than to the software, and the model is left to work out which parts of an unstructured conversation belong in a note and which do not. That is a harder problem than transcription, and it is where these products differ from one another.

Abridge positions the draft as a draft. The clinician remains the author of the record and signs it, which is both a clinical-safety position and a regulatory one: a generated note that entered a patient's chart unreviewed would be a different product with a different risk profile. Recent HealthTech has not independently evaluated the accuracy of the drafts the product produces, and nothing on this page should be read as such an assessment.

The company sells to health systems rather than to individual clinicians, which shapes the product: integration with the electronic health record, administrative controls and audit trails matter as much as the transcription itself.
