What it does
The surgeon sits at a console with a magnified stereoscopic view and controls wristed instruments inside the patient. Nothing moves on its own: every instrument movement originates with the surgeon, filtered for tremor and scaled down.

What the system changes is mechanical rather than cognitive, range of motion inside the body, a stable view, and a seated position for operations that would otherwise be performed standing for hours. The clinical decisions remain entirely the surgeon's.
First brought to market in 1999, it is by some distance the oldest product in this library, and a useful corrective to the assumption that healthcare technology moves at software speed.
