What it does

Intuitive Surgical was founded in Sunnyvale in 1995 and brought the first da Vinci system to market in 1999. A surgeon operates from a console, controlling instruments inside the patient through small incisions, with a magnified stereoscopic view.

The system is not autonomous and is not marketed as such: every movement originates with the surgeon. What the robot changes is the mechanics (wristed instruments inside the body, tremor filtering, and a seated working position) rather than the decision-making.

The company is among the oldest in this library, and it is included partly for that reason. Robotic surgery is a reminder that healthcare technology has a long adoption curve measured in decades and in capital equipment, not only in software release cycles.
